Thepresentkinematicstudyaimedatdeterminingwhethertheobservationofarm/handgesturesperformedbyconspecificsaffectedanactionapparentlyunrelatedtothegesture(i.e.,reaching-grasping).In3experimentsweexaminedtheinfluenceofdifferentgesturesonactionkinematics.Wealsoanalyzedtheeffectsofwordscorrespondinginmeaningtothegestures,onthesameaction.InExperiment1,thetypeofgesture,valenceandactor’sgazeweretheinvestigatedvariablesParticipantsexecutedtheactionofreaching-graspingafterdiscriminatingwhetherthegesturesproducedbyaconspecificweremeaningfulornot.Themeaningfulgestureswererequestorsymbolicandtheirvalencewaspositiveornegative.Theywerepresentedbytheconspecificeitherblindfoldedornot.IncontrolExperiment2wesearchedforeffectsofthesolegaze,and,inExperiment3,theeffectsofthesamecharacteristicsofwordscorrespondinginmeaningtothegesturesandvisuallypresentedbytheconspecific.Typeofgesture,valence,andgazeinfluencedtheactualactionkinematics;theseeffectsweresimilar,butnotthesameasthoseinducedbywords.Weproposedthatthesignalactivatedaresponsewhichmadetheactualactionfasterfornegativevalenceofgesture,whereasforrequestsignalsandavailablegaze,theresponseinterferedwiththeactualactionmorethansymbolicsignalsandnotavailablegaze.Finally,weproposedtheexistenceofacommoncircuitinvolvedinthecomprehensionofgesturesandwordsandintheactivationofconsequentresponsestothem.

Abstract
