Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), Venetian architect and engraver, was one of the most important artists of the eighteenth century in Italy. Around 1745, he published one of his most popular works, Le Carceri d’invenzione, which later expanded and modified in a new edition in 1761. With only the support of engraving, of drawing, and thanks to the skill in the use of perspective, accompanied by the power of representation, Piranesi manages to lead us on a journey into an imaginary world. But a man-made world, solidly constructed from stone, wood and iron and yet infinite, immobile and timeless.
