The medieval fortresses are a very common and distinctive type among the Emilian historical constructions and the earthquakes of May 20th and 29th, 2012 underlined their high vulnerability. The peak ground acceleration attained at the sites of the fortresses considered in the paper have been evaluated for the two main shocks on the basis of recorded strong motions and through proper attenuation laws. Thus the seismic vulnerability of a typical fortress, in terms of geometrical and constructive features, has been studied by means of a finite element model that permitted to highlight the most vulnerable zones. Then, an abacus of the recurring seismic damage mechanisms has been proposed considering: interaction between the tower and the walls, main body of the tower, upper part of the tower, and roof. Finally, the harmful effects of some recent interventions in reinforced concrete have been discussed.
