Linguistic Hybridity and Fragmented Identities in Belizean Literature

The aim of this article is to examine the way in which the peculiar political, linguistic and cultural position of what was once known as British Honduras has influenced the country’s literature produced in English and Spanish. Although the history and the culture of this (ethnically, religiously, culturally and linguistically) hybrid country, have often been ignored, it is undeniable that its narrative production represents an important contribution to contemporary postcolonial literature. Hence, after an essential historical survey, my paper develops into a punctual analysis of *On Heroes, Lizards and Passion* – a collection of short-stories published in English by Zoila Ellis in 1988 – briefly referring to the novel *Got Seif the Cuin!*, which David Ruiz Puga published in Spanish in 1995.
