It was possible to differentiate between the species Penicillium verrucosum and Penicillium nordicum using a molecular diagnostic test recently set up and the cultural technique with two substrates selective for those species: YES (Yeast Extract Sucrose agar) and DYSG (Dichloran Yeast Extract Sucrose Glycerol agar). Twenty five strains were re-examined from the SSICA collection, isolated from meat products between 1997 and 2007 and identified as belonging to the species Penicillium verrucosum using the classic morphological method. The results of both molecular and cultural techniques showed that 24 of the 25 strains belonged to the species P. nordicum. For only one strain did the two methods yield contrasting results.
