In thispaper,theplanarnonlineardynamicsofanaxiallyacceleratingbeaminthesubcriticalspeed regime isexaminedtheoretically,viatwodifferentnumericaltechniques,employingalargeenough numberofmodesinordertoinvestigatemodalinteractions.Theequationofmotionisdiscretizedvia the Galerkinmethodwhichresultsinasetofcouplednonlinearordinarydifferentialequations (NODEs)withtime-dependentcoefficients.ThesetofNODEsissolvedbymeansofthepseudo- arclengthcontinuationtechniqueandsomeoftheresultsaretestedandverifiedviadirecttime integrationoftheNODEs.Theanalysesincludethesystemtunedtoathree-to-oneinternalresonance, as wellasforthecasewhereitisnot.Resultsareillustratedthroughfrequency–responsediagrams, time traces,phase–planeportraits,andfastFouriertransforms(FFTs).
