During the 1930s and 1940s Muratori laid the theoretical and practicalfoundations for a morphologicalapproach to urban design. The fundamentals of hiscontributionduringtheseyears are considered in thispaper, notably the concept of ‘crisis’, the keyrole of ‘operative history’, the integration of theory and practice, and the use of morphology to translateanalysisintosynthesis and interpretationinto design.
