Summary - Preliminary study on the use of caffeine in farrowing sows With the aim to improve the vitality of piglets at birth, by means of an easy practical application, it was investigated whether caffeine orally administered to sows can be detected in biological fluids (blood, colostrum) of sow and in the blood of piglets at birth. For this study, 6 multiparous hybrid breeding sows received the day before delivery (group 1D), two days before delivery (group 2D) or three days before delivery (group 3D), 6 grams / head / day of caffeine, a single dose before the morning meal. Caffeine was detected at the time of delivery, in the maternal blood, in piglets blood and in colostrum.
