Dark papyri are often difficult to decipher because of the lack of contrast between writing and background. Good results are obtained in the far-red near-infrared spectral band. The use of modern CCD TV cameras and films for aerial photography in this band is described as a flexible tool for inspection and fine-grain photographic recording, respectively. A dark papyrus has been examined. Images taken in this spectral band are shown to demonstrate the improvement in legibility.

Abstract
Dark papyri are often difficult to decipher because of the lack of contrast between writing and background. Good results are obtained in the far-red near-infrared spectral band. The use of modern CCD TV cameras and films for aerial photography in this band is described as a flexible tool for inspection and fine-grain photographic recording, respectively. A dark papyrus has been examined. Images taken in this spectral band are shown to demonstrate the improvement in legibility.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
