An attempt was made to prepare and characterise sol-gel thin films in order to improve the scratch and abrasion resistance of glassware. The surface properties of the glass can be improved by depositing films showing a resistance to indentation higher than that of the substrate, good adhesion to it, and a regular surface morphology. Single oxide (ZrO2 or TiO2) and mixed oxide (ZrO2-B2O3 and TiO2-B2O3) films were deposited by dip coating from solution, followed by heat treatment. The surface mechanical properties of the prepared samples were characterised by scratch tests at constant and variable load, while the film morphology was characterised by contact profilometry, SEM and AFM. The best compromise between scratch hardness, critical load and roughness parameters was obtained using pure ZrO2 films about 1 micron thick.

Abstract
The best compromise between scratch hardness, critical load and roughness parameters was obtained using pure ZrO2 films about 1 micron thick.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
