Transition period is today one of the most important phase of all the productive and reproductive life of a dairy cow. Infact is characterized by very important metabolic changes from the dry condition, to the delivery, to a big milk production in a very short time. The cows that often are not able to stand these drastic changing, show several pathological conditions like increase NEFA blood content, chetosis, ruminal acidosis, retained placenta, metritis, pyometra, left abomasal displacement (LAD), milk fever and heavy feet pathologies always associated with a big decrease of body conditions score (BCS) often followed by the death of the animal. To avoid these problems, Researchers and breeders have tried many expedients like the “Steming up”, PG into drinking water (1), Anionic salts during transition period (2). Then the Researchers though that also pathogens bacteria could play an important role in determining these kind of problem, so they tried a third generation cephalosporin, Ceftiofur (Excenel®), very important because gives the double advantage of a therapeutic effect associate to the fact that does not reach the mammary gland so does not get to the milk. (3). An improvement to Excenel® is represented by Naxcel® that has the advantage to have a slow release into the blood stream so needs only one administration and has a therapeutic effect without reacing the milk. The aims of this study have been the followings: verify the efficacy of Ceftiofur (Naxcel®) for the maintenance of BCS, nd increase milk production, investigate about the efficacy of Naxcel® in decreasing NEFA, Chetosis and LAD, improving reproductive performances like uterine involutions, average time parturition first A.I., average numbers of inseminations per pregnancy and average number of pregnancies within the second A.I. Table I and II shows that Naxcel® has had a very high efficacy in improving all these parameters.
