The amino acid "fingerprint" of proteinaceous binding media in mural paintings of the cupola of Florence Cathedral was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Multivariate analysis allowed characterization of the reference binders according to their composition and clear differentiation of those used by Vasari from those of Zuccari, pointing out the differences in the painting techniques adopted by the above artists. No effect of the pigments in the reference binders was noted, excluding interferences due to possible interactions between binders and pigments in the present analytical procedure.

Abstract

The amino acid "fingerprint" of proteinaceous binding media in mural paintings of the cupola of Florence Cathedral was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Multivariate analysis allowed characterization of the reference binders according to their composition and clear differentiation of those used by Vasari from those of Zuccari, pointing out the differences in the painting techniques adopted by the above artists. No effect of the pigments in the reference binders was noted, excluding interferences due to possible interactions between binders and pigments in the present analytical procedure.
