The adoption of infants, whether the mother's own or outsiders, occurs in many species and can be especially easily withnessed in the case of rodents' retrieving an infant from outside the nest. Acoustic (ultrasound), olfactory, and visual signals emitted by the infant evoke this behaviour. This paper reports a group of experiments on adoption in which a nursing female albino mouse (Swiss) was given a choice of infants, in some cases of the same species and, in others of different ones.

Abstract
The adoption of infants, whether the mother's own or outsiders, occurs in many species and can be especially easily withnessed in the case of rodents' retrieving an infant from outside the nest. Acoustic (ultrasound), olfactory, and visual signals emitted by the infant evoke this behaviour. This paper reports a group of experiments on adoption in which a nursing female albino mouse (Swiss) was given a choice of infants, in some cases of the same species and, in others of different ones.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
