Tethering or very close confinement of pregnant sows in individual stalls to reduce aggression are common practices in intensive husbandry, but is considered by many to be contrary to the welfare of the sows (Stolba et al., 1983). In the present paper we have examined in detail the aggression of commonally penned sows to ascertain where and when aggression occurs, so that recommendations can be made on how to reduce aggression and to make confinement of dry sows unnecessary.
