Abstract

HHV-6 was recently identified as the etiologic agent of exanthema subitum. In an attempt to clarify the association of exanthema subitum with different HHV-6 groups, we characterized 9 HHV-6 strains isolated from infant patients. Virus isolated by cultivation in cord blood mononuclear cells were characterized by DNA hybridization to HHV-6 specific probes, monoclonal antibodies and PCR.
