Since the isolation in 1986 of HHV-6 from PBMCs of patient with AIDS and lymphoproliferative disorders, an effort has been made to understand the possible immunoplathogenitc role of this virus in human diseases. The presence and distribution of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) variants was investigated by polymerase chain reaction in biopsy specimens of non-neoplastic lymph nodes form HIV-infected patients with lymphoadenopathy syndrome (LAS) and HIV-seronegative individuals. Diffusion of HHV-6 infection in lymph nodes and distribuzion of HHV-6 variants have been discussed.
