Coating of pigmentary TiO2 was carried out in aq. solns. of Na silicate and Al2(SO4)3 or NaAlO2 at pH 3.1-11.3. The coatings consisted of aluminosilicates rather than single oxides. This conclusion was based on the fact that coatings did not have a sandwich structure and had low isoelec. points. The structure of coatings which were obtained with Al2(SO4)3 was more regular and had lower surface area. The formation of coatings depended on pH and Si/Al ratio.
