An analytical formulation of the impact of a block on protection fences is reported in this paper. After a bibliographic review of block impact on metallic net tests, some particular tests carried out to certificate the capability of protection works, according to European guidelines, are examined. The analytical formulation applied to the block impact arrest computation, observed in these tests, allowed us a to find a good agreement between experimental and analytical results and therefore validates the model. The application of the analytical formulation to blocks having different impact characteristics put into evidence that the use of energetic criteria is not sufficient for a good work design.
