Through a formal and stylistic analysis of a selection of examples taken from Asterius the Sophist’s Homilies on the Psalms, the present paper’s aim is to show that Asterius’ exegetical and hermeneutical praxis is the result of a deep intertwinement between Second Sophistic oratory skills and tra- ditional exegetical modes, a solid connection which causes the exegesis to be a skillfully crafted result of mastery in the use of figurative and meta- phorical language.
