This article defends the antiquity of the paradosis in Verg. Aen. 469-473, with special reference to Eur. Ba. 981 and Lucan. VII 777-780. It also considers the relevance of a fresco in the House of the Vettii at Pompeii (LIMC VII/1, 1994, 310 fig. 28) for the interpretation of IV 469f.
