In this paper, a recently proposed oversampled detector for digital storage channels affected by transition noise is analyzed in terms of information rates. To this purpose, a simulation-based method is applied to evaluate the information rates. The proposed analysis extends recent work on the information rates of magnetic recording channels affected by colored Gaussian thermal noise, intersymbol interference and signal-dependent transition noise. The results suggest that oversampling may represent an effective and practical solution for transition-noise-limited digital storage channels.

Abstract

In this paper, a recently proposed oversampled detector for digital storage channels affected by transition noise is analyzed in terms of information rates. To this purpose, a simulation-based method is applied to evaluate the information rates. The proposed analysis extends recent work on the information rates of magnetic recording channels affected by colored Gaussian thermal noise, intersymbol interference and signal-dependent transition noise. The results suggest that oversampling may represent an effective and practical solution for transition-noise-limited digital storage channels.
