The long-term effects on tinnitus perception by subjects listening to notched noise stimuli (i.e. referred to as windowed noise therapy) was assessed by measuring the variation of subject’s tinnitus loudness over a period of 2-12 months. The effectiveness of the windowed noise therapy in reducing tinnitus was tested using non-notched broad-band noise and noise of water as control sound therapies. A significant long-term reduction of tinnitus loudness was found in subjects treated with notched noise but not in those treated with the two control sound stimulations. These results, although preliminary and awaiting further experimental support, address to the beneficial effect of such a new approach and to the importance of the personalized sound treatment of tinnitus sufferers for the development of an effective tinnitus sound therapy.
