Husserl and Haugeland on Constitution

Sia Husserl che Haugeland hanno sviluppato una teoria della costituzione per spiegare come i nostri episodi mentali possano vertere su oggetti fisici e così, tramite la relazione intenzionale, superare il divario tra mente e mondo fisico. Le teorie dei due filosofi, che appartengono a delle tradizioni filosofiche molto diverse, mostrano non solo come gli episodi mentali possano avere un contenuto empirico, ma anche come questo contenuto sia articolato da esperienze fatte nel passato e da uno sfondo olistico di altri episodi mentali. Lo scopo di questo articolo è di esporre e confrontare le due posizioni per evidenziare come la nozione della costituzione possa essere adottata per affrontare i problemi principali della filosofia della mente contemporanea, in particolare la domanda su come possa sussistere una relazione tra la mente a il suo ambiente fisico. Both Husserl and Haugeland develop an account of constitution to address the question of how our mental episodes can be about physical objects and thus, through the intentional relation, bridge the gap between the mental and the physical. The respective theories of the two philosophers of very different background show not only how mental episodes can have empirical content, but also how this content is shaped by past experiences or a holistic background of other mental episodes. In this article I first outline and then contrast their positions in order to show how the notion of constitution can be adopted to address major problems of contemporary philosophy of mind, especially the question of how the mind can be related to its physical environment.
