Chapter 2 presents a literature review on the topics of the study. Chapter 3 describes the most relevant geotechnical characteristics of the Venetian lagoon. Technical details of the laboratory equipment and testing procedures are given in Chapter 4: Chapter 5 presents the experimental Constant Rate of Strain (CRS) program. The experimental results of this study are summarized in Chapter 6. Chapter 7 presents two illustrative one-dimensional settlement calculations. Chapter 8 presents a brief summary of the thesis, with recommendations for further research.
