The dissertation analyzes the plays inspired by the Book of Judith’s biblical episode, from the Maccabean Revolts (2nd century B. C.) to the second half of the 20th Century. Obviously the biblical vicissitudes of Judith and Holofernes have been adapted and reworked in different ways in different ages, despite this it represent always the mirror of the historical times characterized by the people‘s rebellion against a tyrant. Confirming this is the connection between the drawing up of the Book of Judith and the contemporary Maccabean revolts; a historical time where the Judaean people needed to be encouraged to continue the resistance and the political-religious fight against the Hellenization wanted by the Seleucids.
