The issue of the relationship between the painting and its frame did not arise in the modern era, much less in the contemporary era; rather, it is a question that classical art had already addressed. This paper examines this relationship in the Middle Ages, beginning with formal studies from the Justinian era and analyzed through the critical lens of Ernst Kitzinger and Jerome Baschet.

Abstract
The issue of the relationship between the painting and its frame did not arise in the modern era, much less in the contemporary era; rather, it is a question that classical art had already addressed. This paper examines this relationship in the Middle Ages, beginning with formal studies from the Justinian era and analyzed through the critical lens of Ernst Kitzinger and Jerome Baschet.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
