This article analyses the multilevel governance of food safety in Italy and the European Union, highlighting the interplay between institutions, regulatory frameworks and information infrastructures. It argues that fragmentation of competences and weak coordination mechanisms undermine the effectiveness of policies, particularly in the absence of interoperable data systems. Building on recent EU legal developments – from the General Food Law to the Data Act – the study emphasises the role of data as a regulatory infrastructure. It concludes by advocating integrated approaches, grounded in the One Health paradigm, and the potential establishment of an independent national authority.

Abstract
This article analyses the multilevel governance of food safety in Italy and the European Union, highlighting the interplay between institutions, regulatory frameworks and information infrastructures. It argues that fragmentation of competences and weak coordination mechanisms undermine the effectiveness of policies, particularly in the absence of interoperable data systems. Building on recent EU legal developments – from the General Food Law to the Data Act – the study emphasises the role of data as a regulatory infrastructure. It concludes by advocating integrated approaches, grounded in the One Health paradigm, and the potential establishment of an independent national authority.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
