In recent years, Europe has invested enormously into the establishment of scientific research infrastructures (RIs). These are new types of organizations of research service-delivering organizations in almost all scientific disciplines, very often based on local or regional core facilities and research centers. They exist as single-sited or distributed research facilities bringing together interdisciplinary and multinational teams. At current mapping exercise showed that there are more than one thousands of such RIs (included in more than 742 organizations, mostly universities and research centers, according to the MERIL database https://portal.meril.eu/meril/), with about one hundred of European relevance. Similar structured networked-organizations exist in many other continents, thereby multiply in the field of research infrastructures to estimate several thousands. These RIs, are mostly led by scientists who are claimed to balance their scientific background with strong management and leadership skills. This book provides insights into examples of complex managerial issues involved in setting up and operating such RIs, developing appropriate service provision, and market close communication and dissemination activities. It is complemented by some use cases which were developed during a new Executive Masters’ Programme in Management of Research Infrastructures (EMMRI) (started in 2017) as part of the EU-funded coordination project RItrain.
