Arthropods are part of the species-rich soil biota that, in the Mediterranean Basin, reaches a high peak of diversity. These organisms belong to the detritus-based food web and contribute to the degradation/mineralization of organic matter. A general overview of soil arthropods is outlined, and the diversity of a few minor taxa (palpigrades, pseudoscorpions, and proturans) is described in more detail. Ecosystem services and the possibility of using soil arthropods as indicators of environmental quality are also briefly illustrated.
