"Wert" and "Wertung": Theodor Lipps' Transcendental-Psychological Concept of Value

My paper takes its departure from an analysis of Theodor Lipps' unpublished essay "Aesthetische und ethische Werte" in order to illustrate the theoretical framework in which it fits. After defining the connection between value and "Einfühlung", it goes on to distinguish a number of value concepts: agreeableness value, empathy value, value for us, and value in itself. If the definition of value with regard to the activity of the subject leads Lipps to criticise the theory of judgement professed by Alexius meinong, the determination of value with respect to moral personality leads him to the concept of a value system, whose centre is the ethical value.
