Here we address some of the different approaches used to categorize estuaries in terms of their nutrient loads, productivity, and benthic metabolism. We also discuss a range of topics including a brief history of the classification of estuaries, estuarine productivity, benthic nutrients fluxes, the importance of benthic macrofauna, and the classification of estuaries by ecosystem metabolism.
