The article aims to briefly review the main aspects of European language policies regarding foreign languages as they have evolved over the decades. The reflections develop starting from certain constants that lead to concrete objectives, such as promoting democratic citizenship, inclusion, and social justice, supporting and promoting multilingualism and the preservation of linguistic and cultural diversity, framing (multi)lingual and intercultural education in a perspective that encompasses a learner’s entire lifespan. The article also aims to highlight the trends that have emerged in relation to the development of interpretive frameworks that can make the reader more aware of what is happening and could happen in the future regarding the role and, above all, the purpose of European language policies.
