This chapter critically examines dominant narratives portraying science and ecology as neutral and unified domains. Drawing on political ecology and science and technology studies, it argues that scientific knowledge is historically situated and shaped by social conflicts, power relations and economic interests. By questioning technocratic and reductionist interpretations of scientific authority, the chapter highlights how environmental controversies often emerge around competing forms of expertise and alternative epistemologies, especially in contemporary ecological and climate struggles.

Abstract

This chapter critically examines dominant narratives portraying science and ecology as neutral and unified domains. Drawing on political ecology and science and technology studies, it argues that scientific knowledge is historically situated and shaped by social conflicts, power relations and economic interests. By questioning technocratic and reductionist interpretations of scientific authority, the chapter highlights how environmental controversies often emerge around competing forms of expertise and alternative epistemologies, especially in contemporary ecological and climate struggles.
