Abstract The article addresses the topic of building self-recovery, highlighting some aspects and focusing on the experience of two projects in the city of Florence. The procedural and choral nature, its generative connection with the ability of the Movements to "create" transformation, the multiscalarity inherent in self-recovery projects make it not only a “tool” but a real policy to be implemented on a broad scale, which is inspired by social justice and politics as a pursuit of the common good. Precisely for this reason, such projects encounter ambiguous attitudes on the part of the Institutions, even when it seems that they have some willingness to support them. Furthermore, if on the one hand, self-recovery represents - when achieved - the recognition of the right of citizens to claim dignified, safe, sustainable and affordable housing, on the other hand the transition from the "informal" to the "formal" that it seals can be read as the result of a process of patrimonialization of knowledge related to social struggles that concerns the whole of society.
