The primacy of vernacular languages for worship in the Reformation did not cancel the key role of Latin both in the devotional and pedagogical tradition. Collections such as Georg Aemilius’ Hymni Sacri Germanicolatini (Basel 1568) give an example of the complexity of intertextual relations between Luther’s hymns and their Latin translations, in a musical and historical setting in which the German culture was dominant. For Italian protestants, the xx Salmi di David (Genève, 1554) provided a translation into Italian, complete with music, of a selection from the Calvinist Psalter in French, giving a different example on the functions of translation in the context of a forbidden religious practice performed in hiding.
