The importance of the role played by the magazine presença in publicising and initiating a critical interpretation of the figure of Fernando Pessoa is noteworthy, although the limits of its exegetical horizon have also been pointed out. The relationship between the poet of Mensagem and the magazine from Coimbra has already been studied through the letters exchanged with the directors of presença. But which Fernando Pessoa appears in the pages of “fôlha de arte e crítica”? What image (or rather, images) do the thirty-three “gifts” with which Pessoa repaid the efforts of the presencistas during his lifetime (plus the fourteen texts published posthumously) give us? What did the poet choose to give of himself to presença? Was he consistent with the statements that appear in his correspondence? These are some of the questions that this article will try to answer by browsing through the collection of the Coimbra magazine.
