Abstract: During my multi-site research among the Aeolian migrants in Australia, I worked with oral histories and archival documents, which revealed the important role of women as cultural mediators. Among the Aeolian women, thanks to the collection dedicated to her and deposited at the Italian Historical Society of Melbourne, the figure of Lena Santospirito stands out as a mediator par excellence. Born in Australia to parents who emigrates from Aeolian Islands, she was called the “mamma degli italiani” for being a point of reference from 1938 to the years of after World War II for the entire Italian community of Australia.
