Alcaeus’ Hymn to Apollo · In this article, I reconsider Alcaeus’ Hymn to Apollo (fr. 307 V.), with particular reference to (@) the consistency of the corpus of Al- caic ‘hymns’, their place in Alexandrian editions and their performative purpose; (2) the definition of the genre in the witnesses (hymn, paean or proem?) and the prob- lem of the presence of the Delphic Apollo in Lesbos; (3) the relationship between fr. 7 V. and the alleged journey of Alcaeus to Delphi; (4) the paraphrase of the hymn in Imerius. This is followed by (5) final considerations on the origin of this ‘hymn’, the Alcaeus’ hymns and Alexandrian editions, and the reliability of Imerius’ testimony.
