Ambasciatori nella prima età moderna tra corti italiane ed europee

With the establishment of permanent embassies between the 15th and 16th centuries and their consolidation in the 17th century, the figure of the ambassador experienced profound changes. This volume investigates its various aspects, analysing the stages of the mission abroad: the criteria for choosing the diplomat, the arrival and the long years spent at the court of destination and the conditions of the return home. Also considered, in the context of the significant growth of circulating information, are the procedures for preserving correspondence, the secrecy of which had to be ensured. Attention is then paid to the networks of relations, which were particularly important since the ambassador had not yet embarked on the path towards professionalisation, and were closely connected to the forms of ‘appearance’ and diplomatic sociability. The cultural and social implications of both the ambassador's stay in a distant country and his return to his home country are also explored. Running through the book is a question about the significance of the rapid and sometimes frenetic turnover of individuals to whom portions of the diplomatic mediation were entrusted - envoys, agents, secretaries, men of letters, sometimes women - all figures close to the ambassador, often in positions of little or no transparency, who acted as informants, and vehicles of cultural exchange. Through the innovative examination of the relationship between treatises, forms of the political and practical sources on the ambassador, this volume critically reflects on some pivotal themes in the history of European diplomacy in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Con il radicamento delle ambasciate permanenti fra XV e XVI secolo e il loro consolidamento nel XVII secolo, la figura dell’ambasciatore visse mutamenti profondi. Questo volume ne indaga i diversi aspetti, analizzando le tappe della missione all’estero: i criteri di scelta del diplomatico, l’arrivo e i lunghi anni trascorsi alla corte di destinazione e le condizioni del rientro in patria. Sono considerate inoltre, nel quadro della crescita significativa delle informazioni circolanti, le procedure di conservazione delle corrispondenze, di cui occorreva assicurare la segretezza. L’attenzione è rivolta poi alle reti di rapporti, particolarmente importanti dal momento che l’ambasciatore non aveva ancora imboccato il percorso verso la professio-nalizzazione, e connesse in modo stringente alle forme dell’«apparire» e alla sociabilità diplomatica. Sono approfondite anche le implicazioni culturali e sociali, sia della permanenza dell’ambasciatore in un paese lontano che del suo ritorno al paese di provenienza. Attraversa il libro una domanda relativa al significato dell’avvicendamento, rapido e a tratti frenetico, di individui a cui erano commesse porzioni della mediazione diplomatica - inviati, agenti, segretari, uomini di lettere, a volte donne - tutte figure prossime all’ambasciatore, spesso in posizioni poco o affatto trasparenti, che fungevano da informatori, procacciatori di notizie, veicoli dello scambio culturale. Nell’esaminare in modo innovativo i rapporti fra la trattatistica, le forme del politico e le fonti a carattere pratico sull’ambasciatore, questo volume riflette criticamente su alcuni temi-cardine della storia della diplomazia europea nei secoli XVI e XVII.
