Since the 1960s, Luciano Caruso (Foglianise 1944 – Florence 2002) has been a key figure in exploring the relationship between word and image. In his artistic work, writing plays a central role, with a focus on enhancing its visual and material aspects. His aesthetic research is inextricably linked to his work as an essayist, critic, scholar, and organiser of avant-garde cultural events. This volume examines for the first time Caruso's intense and diverse artistic production during his Neapolitan period (1963-1976), through a selection of artworks primarily housed in the Luciano Caruso Archive, as well as other public and private collections. This new interpretation, developed to explore Caruso’s artistic beginnings, is grounded in a philological methodology that has been made possible by the complex and diverse documentary materials preserved in the artist’s archive, recently made accessible to the academic community.
