Anonymous, On competitions (1403)

This article analyses the anonymous fragment of the treatise On Competitions preserved in the Pindaric scholia. It reassesses the long-standing debate over the identity of the anonymous author, previously associated with Kleophanes and other historians of athletic festivals, and evaluates the fragment's historical and philological significance. The discussion highlights the critical approach adopted by the anonymous scholar in distinguishing between different Theban festivals and situates the work within the broader tradition of Greek antiquarian literature on competitions.
