The article proposes a study of the phraseological units referring to the word crisis through the analysis of the entries present in the Nuevo Tesoro Lexicográfico de la Lengua Española and the concordances of the existing phraseological units in the Corpus Diacrónico del Español and the Corpus del Nuevo diccionario histórico del español. After an analysis of the meaning of the word crisis and its phrasological units until the 18th century, mostly referring to medicine, we move on to the study of the characteristics of its semantic extension in the 19th and 20th centuries, in which the influences of French culture and the diffusion by intellectuals and politicians of liberal extraction have a prominent place.
