This article examines the single surviving fragment of Kleophanes' On Competitions, preserved in the scholia to Pindar's Olympian 9. It discusses the author's uncertain identity and chronology, as well as the possible relationship between his work and other treatises devoted to Greek athletic festivals. Despite the extremely fragmentary evidence, the study shows that Kleophanes contributed to the scholarly tradition concerned with the historical interpretation of Panhellenic competitions.
