Started in 2003 in relation to the theme of the Roman amphitheatre, the "Project Durrës" highlighted the need to expand and integrate the knowledge on the architectural part of the monument. In cooperation with the Polytechnic University of Tirana, the project of internationalization “Rilievo dell’anfiteatro di Durazzo: conoscenza di un monumento per la valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale mondiale”, started in 2005 and was coordinated by prof. Paolo Giandebiaggi. Initiated in 2004, the survey and study works continued through collaboration between Italian and Albanian partners. Primary objective of the survey conducted by the team of the University of Parma was to have formal and metric data to understand the original configuration of the building. In addition, the graphic analysis and the comparison with similar artefacts have been used to hypothesize the size of the plan and the functional hierarchy of the spaces. Different types of surveys were carried out during the missions conducted from 2004 to 2015: survey of the archaeological excavations, survey of the architectural elements, survey extended to the urban context. The integrated methods of detection ranging from the use of topographic instruments, to those typical of the direct survey, to the more recent three-dimensional survey using laser scanner and photo-modelling.
