Landscapes of Memory. Funerary botany in Villetta Cemetery, Parma. Trees and flowers have always played a primary role in the construction of the spaces for human life. Even more in the design of the burial, nature and architecture merge and complete each other, both in the structure of the enclosure and in the decoration of the graves. The funerary botany derives its techniques and methods from the different styles of gardening art and the plants improve the composition with their aesthetical and decorative aspect. Moreover, they transmit messages of mourning and commemoration, even living than painted or sculpted over the monuments. This research is aimed to analyze and represent by the tools of drawing the vegetable raw material and its matching to create green structures and combinations, up to codificate the specific characteristic of the “green cemeteries”. In sacred architecture planning, a conscious historical and symbolic rediscovery of the vegetation in all its aspects and qualities, integrated with the requirements of management and maintenance, can positively resolve some issues of high interest and the claim of quality, beauty and meaning for the contemporary city.
