“‘The sunny and the vintage land, farewell!’: la figura del exiliado español en el romanticismo británico”

Este artículo reconstruye la transformación de la figura del exiliado español dentro del contexto histórico-cultural y literario británico entre las últimas décadas del Setecientos y los años 1820. En esta época marcada por los sucesos de la Guerra de la Independencia y del trienio liberal, la representación del desterrado en las letras de lengua inglesa, y sobre todo en la producción poética, pasa de una falta de especificidad histórico-cultural a una pertinencia histórico-política e ideológica basada en la progresiva reevaluación de la imagen de España y en la reconfiguración de las relaciones entre las dos naciones durante la edad romántica. Los textos poéticos publicados entre las décadas de 1790 y 1820 hacen del exiliado el portador de la identidad cultural de la España napoleónica y post-napoleónica y de su peculiar condición histórica, y, al mismo tiempo, un punto de intersección entre la representación de experiencias específicas y de aspectos universales de la condición humana. / This article reconstructs the transformation of the figure of the Spanish exile in Britain’s historical, cultural and literary context between the end of the eighteenth century and the 1820s. In a period that was deeply marked by the Peninsular War and the liberal triennium, the representation of the Spanish exile in British literature, and poetry in particular, shifts from a lack of specific historical and cultural features to a more historically, politically and ideologically pertinent figuration based on the progressive reevaluation of the image of Spain and the reconfigured relations between the two nations in the Romantic age. The poetic texts published between the 1790s and the 1820s posit the exile as the bearer of the cultural identity of Napoleonic and post-Napoleonic Spain and its peculiar historical condition, and as a point of intersection between the representation of specifically located experiences and more universal features of the human condition.
