This chapter describes the use of mathematical programming for developing farm-level models that are useful for agricultural policy assessments. It focuses on the technique most frequently used in agricultural policy evaluation in the European Union (EU), positive mathematical programming (PMP). Unlike other mathematical programming tools, PMP can be applied at different levels of aggregation, such as individual farms, farm types and regions.
