The aim of the article is to identify structures of (fictional and nonfictional) texts that determine their cognitive value. I argue that the cognitive relevance of a text is too often reduced to its communicating information. The cognitive impact of a (fictional as well as nonfictional) text can also, as I try to show, lie in its imparting knowledge that is not explicitly contained in the text as well as in training capacities that enable the reader to acquire new knowledge.
