This article treats lines 8-9 of Catullus’ first poem. The text is discussed afresh, despite the agreement among recent editors about the interjection o at line 8 and the punctuation of lines 8-9. This paper’s aim is to restore quidem instead of quod o, suggest its pivotal function, together with a different punctuation, and shed some light on the relation between Catullus and the patrona Virgo.
