I barnabiti tra storia dell’ordine e storia della Chiesa

Tra ‘5 e ‘600, i regolari (e soprattutto i nuovi ordini) dovettero misurarsi con l’elaborazione agiografica della propria storia per fissare un’identità condivisa che fosse felicemente spendibile entro la Chiesa e vincente nel mare magnum delle religioni. Nel contempo, le norme e i modelli di santità che avrebbero regolato la scrittura agiografica erano in via di radicale ridefinizione da parte delle autorità romane. La prima storia di largo respiro della congregazione barnabita fu pubblicata solo agli inizi del ‘700 in un contesto ormai del tutto mutato rispetto a quello in cui erano state elaborate le compilazioni storiche degli altri ordini regolari. Nel saggio si esaminano le ragioni di questo ritardo (l’ordine dei barnabiti sorto negli anni ’30 del ‘500 aveva subito un processo inquisitoriale negli anni ’50 e il suo maestro spirituale era stato condannato come eresiarca) e si ricostruisce il tortuoso percorso attraverso il quale l’ordine si riappropriò del proprio passato impiegando oltre un secolo e mezzo per riuscire a elaborare una versione condivisa delle origini da presentare serenamente all’esterno. Between XVI and XVII century regular orders (expecially the new religious orders of the Counter-Reformation such as barnabites, jesuits, theatines) had to face the challenge of writing their own history in order to fix their identity, their founders and their origins. During the same period ecclesiastical authorities in Rome were establishing new legal models of sanctity and strict procedures of canonisation that influenced the hagiographic writings. The first official history of the barnabite order was published only in the early eighteenth century. The article analyses the causes of this delay (the first members of the congregation had underwent an inquisitorial trial and a stern repression in the fifties of sixteenth century) and the tortuous process through which the barnabite order could finally develope its historical identity as one of the cornerstones of the post-Tridentine Catholic Church.
